First Perfect Marks for Canada since 1992
Day 2 – 4th FINA Synchronised Swimming World Trophy
Another first position for Canada at the thematic team event
Montreal, November 28, 2009 – The Canadian synchronised swimming team triomphed in a third event this weekend and was awarded its first perfect marks since 1992, in the thematic team event on Saturday, during the 4th FINA Synchronised Swimming World Trophy. Marie-Pier Boudreau-Gagnon moved up to the second position in the world ranking at the solo event.
In an America-themed routine, Jo-Annie Fortin (Montréal, QC), Sandy Gill (Coquitlam, B.C.), Chloé Isaac (Brossard, QC), Emilia Kopcik (Surrey, B.C.), Ève Lamoureux (Montréal, QC), Karine Thomas (Gatineau, QC), Valérie Welsh (Saint-Nicolas, QC) and Erin Wilson (North York, ON) earned two perfect marks of 10 and three 9.9 for a total of 99.333 points. They finished ahead of Russia (98.333 points) and Spain (97.667 points).
The Canadians were the judegs’ favorites with their pulsing rhythm, extremely fast and dynamic routine, and the use of props.
« It’s rewarding to get perfect marks », said Canadian Team captain, Ève Lamoureux. « They are pushing us to work harder, especially for the 2012 Olympic Games », added her teammate Chloé Isaac.
Soloist Marie-Pier Boudreau-Gagnon gains a world rank and sits on second place
At the free solo event, Marie-Pier Boudreau-Gagnon took the second position with 97.333 points, gaining one position in the world ranking. Boudreau-Gagnon won the bronze medal at the technical solo event at the 2009 FINA World Aquatic Championships, in Rome, last summer.
Performing on the song « Feeling Good » by Muse, Marie-Pier Boudreau-Gagnon swam with intensity and expressed herself through the music. She also captivated the crowd by her strenght, height, rotations and many rhythm changes.
The Rivière-du-Loup, Quebec, athlete finished ahead of Andrea Fuentes from Spain who was awarded 97.000 points. Natalia Ishchenko, gold medalist last summer in Rome, kept her title by earning two perfect marks of 10 and three 9.9 for a total of 99.333 points.
“I’m very happy”, said Marie-Pier Boudreau-Gagnon. “It was the first time I performed this routine and I see this as another step towards a silver medal at the 2011 FINA World Aquatic Championships.”
